SHC directs police to submit challan on May 9 rioting cases

 KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) directed the IO to submit summons to the concerned court regarding the bail applications of the suspects detained in connection with the May 9 riots.

Appearing before a two-judge bench comprising Justice Agha Faisal and Justice Abdul Mubeen Lakho, the public prosecutor confirmed receipt of challans in the cases. However, Justice Faisal asked, "Has the challan been presented to the court?" The public prosecutor said that the challan has not yet been delivered to the concerned court.

Hafeezuddin Advocate, counsel for the petitioner, raised concerns about the omission of his client's name from the FIR. He emphasized that despite the three-month period, the period for filing an appeal is only 14 days.

Consequently, the court directed the IO to submit the challan to the appropriate court without delay. The court then adjourned the consideration of the motion for two weeks.

During the previous hearing, lawyers representing the petitioners expressed dismay at the release of the persons named in the FIR after the press conference. On the contrary, persons who were not even mentioned in the FIR were detained.

It is worrying that some of those detained were held in places where no attack had taken place. For example, Javed Ali was arrested by the Korangi police while his brother remains in custody. In addition, individuals unrelated to the May 9 events such as Muhammad Bilal and Muhammad Ali were detained by the Taimur police. Since May 10, several citizens have been detained.

Meanwhile, another bench of the SHC directed the Anti-Corruption Bureau to investigate allegations of bribery in land grabbing cases.
