Amazon will also allow non-Prime customers to order from Amazon Fresh for now, but will eventually allow them to get deliveries from Whole Foods and other third-party grocers.

In addition, Bloomberg reports that Amazon is also changing the way customers order groceries online. Instead of customers placing three separate orders for products at Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh and other Amazon marketplace stores, Amazon is working to streamline the process by allowing users to create just one cart. That change may not come until later this year or in 2024, Bloomberg notes, because Amazon will have to start stocking Whole Foods products at Amazon Fresh centers. After the covid pandemic, Amazon is withdrawing its physical stores. Last year, the company closed all 68 of its Amazon Books, Amazon 4-Star and Amazon Pop Up locations in the US and UK. The company also closed eight of its physical Go stores earlier this year, while CEO Andy Jassy said the company would slow the expansion of Fresh supermarkets until it found a format that "resonates with customers."

As part of this initiative, Amazon is working to redesign some of their existing stores with less of a focus on some of the high-tech they opened with. While customers will still be able to use Amazon's product-sensing Dash Carts and checkout-free Just Walk Out technology, Amazon says it will also install self-checkouts, "giving customers even more ways to save time on grocery trips and make the best choices it works for them." In Chicago, Amazon has already revamped its "expanded" grocery stores, along with a built-in Krispy Kreme store. Bloomberg reports that Amazon is eliminating "hundreds" of junior management jobs as a result of the changes.

Although Amazon is remodeling some of the stores it already has, Hoggett told Bloomberg the company still intends to open more locations. “We're looking at growing a large chain of brick-and-mortar grocery stores in the U.S. and around the world,” says Hoggett. "We're still working out how best to do that ... but we will be opening more grocery stores."
