 A new £900m life sciences campus has been approved

Plans for a new £900m 15-building life science campus in Hertfordshire have been approved.The site would provide 1.6 million sq ft (148,645 m2) of space for laboratories, offices and manufacturing facilities in Stevenage.Developers UBS Asset Management and Reef Group said the project, called Elevate Quarter, would be "one of Europe's largest life science campuses" and claimed it could create up to 5,000 new jobs.

The space would also include restaurants, cafes, leisure facilities and three transport hubs providing multi-storey parking for cars and bikes.The buildings would be located around a central green area with a connecting network of paths and open spaces.Stevenage Borough Council's planning and development committee approved the plans, which will be located next to pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline's global research and development facility and Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst.

The approval follows on from the company's existing project in Stevenage - the redevelopment of The Forum shopping center into new manufacturing premises - which was approved in February. Piers Slater, joint chief executive of Reef Group, said: “The further approval of our new life sciences campus cements its position as a leading European cluster for advanced therapies.

“Stevenage is ideally placed to attract world-class talent and the campus will facilitate further collaboration between large multinationals and biotechs."Kompus was designed to enable these life sciences to grow and expand over time, creating an open and accessible environment for staff and the wider public."
