A new carpet recycling plant is the first in the UK and "key" to reducing carbon emissions in the flooring industry, its founder has said. Innovate Recycle's factory in Northampton aims to process up to 20,000 tonnes of waste carpets a year.Most carpets in the UK are made from plastic and other materials that cannot be easily recycled. Joseph Eccleston said his vision was to "put carpet back into carpet" and divert waste from landfill.

It is estimated that only 2% of the UK's 500,000 tonnes of annual carpet waste is currently recycled, with the material then either sent overseas for processing or converted into carpets if the original carpet was made from more easily recyclable wool.

Currently, carpet waste that is not recycled is either sent to landfill or burned in waste incinerators.Mr Eccleston said he was inspired to tackle the problem after working in the flooring industry as a retailer and noticing a large amount of waste."Seeing is believing. Having this facility in Northampton is about getting people to come and see what we do, how we recycle carpet and the impact it can have," he said.The factory cost around £10m to set up and officially opened at Lodge Farm Industrial Estate in Duston in April.

The factory receives waste, which it then sorts and segregates.
