Dhaka, September 4 – US oil major Chevron, operator of the country's largest gas field in Bibijana, has started production in an expanded area of ​​the field. According to Chevron Bangladesh, a subsidiary of the US company, it started drilling in well No. 27 on August 23 and will take about 2.5-3 months to complete. Chevron Bangladesh signed several agreements in October 2022 with the Energy and Mineral Resources Division as well as state-owned Petrobangla to drill more wells in the expanded Bibiyana gas field. These were supplemental agreements to the Block 12 Production Sharing Agreement for the Bibiyana expansion, an amendment to the Jalalabad Gas and Condensate Purchase and Sale Agreement, and an amendment to the Moulvibazar Condensate Purchase and Sale Agreement for Blocks 13 and 14. Petrobangla officials said during the signing of the agreement , that the main objective of Chevron's Bibiyana Flank Area Extension is to drill new wells here.

Chevron has so far drilled 26 wells in the Bibiyana gas field. In 2023, development well BY-27 will start drilling in the expanded area. "The multinational energy corporation is also planning to drill the BY-28 internal well at a later date," said a top Petrobangla official, adding that significant gas is expected to flow from the field.

Regarding the new drilling plan, Chevron Bangladesh said it is working with Petrobangla and the government to provide the country with safe, reliable, cheap and increasingly clean energy and to look for the opportunities of tomorrow. Chevron produces more than 50% of Bangladesh's total energy demand from domestic natural gas.

"As the largest production field in Bangladesh, the Bibiyana gas field is a great success for the nation. The BY-27 drilling program is a vital project for Bangladesh's long-term energy security, which could lead to an overall increase in Bangladesh's natural gas production," the US company said.
