Mr Poonpong suggested that technology be used to improve data analysis capabilities for public sector policy making, while public-private collaboration should be encouraged to encourage database development to improve the capabilities of large databases and ensure equal access to such data.

"The rapid advancement of technology and the falling cost of accessing equipment or information are significant catalysts for a new digital economy that is not bound by physical space. This transformation is reshaping business operations and employment patterns," he said. "It presents opportunities for those who can access and adapt to these technologies to create, develop and scale businesses. Yet there are challenges for those who cannot keep up with the technology, leading to increased social disparities."

The government needs to build infrastructure and facilitate equal access to technology, Mr Poonpong said, with the public and private sectors working together to take advantage of technological advances. A key driver of the digital economy is the rapid expansion of the platform economy over the past decade, including transportation services, accommodation, e-commerce and social networks, he said.

These businesses do not produce goods or services, but serve as intermediaries, moving markets from physical spaces to the digital world. They also act as matchmakers between buyers and sellers. Much of their work uses the cloud, which is not tied to a physical location and often requires high-level skills, Mr. Poonpong said. The pandemic has accelerated the growth of platform stores.

More companies are also using automation, including artificial intelligence (AI) for management tasks because of its accuracy in analytics, he said. While only certain skills are now being replaced by automation, in the future technology may develop to replace human labor in various skill areas, Mr Poonpong said.

"McKinsey and Company reported that automation can increase output by 0.8 to 1.4%, and jobs with repetitive work patterns have a higher probability of being replaced by machines or artificial intelligence, exceeding 50%. This situation could lead to potential relocation of jobs," he added. he said.
